It’s meal planning day!
We’re snowed in today, so I’m not sure when I’ll actually make it to Aldi to get the week’s shopping done. Whenever that time comes, the list is ready to go. We have (another) cold snap coming up, so I put some heartier meals like chili and an Alfredo bake on the menu this week. I also have my world-famous Tomato Basil Crab Bisque planned for the end of the week. If you haven’t tried that one yet, you should. It’s super easy.
There are a couple of ingredients you may not be able to find at Aldi. I’m certain you can’t get fresh tarragon, and mine doesn’t sell dried since it’s not a particularly popular spice. I already have some on hand because it’s a fantastic spice to add to sauces. You can grab it at most major grocery stores or consider a substitute like oregano or rosemary (dried). The bisque calls for Old Bay seasoning, which you can either grab elsewhere or make your own. Per this site:
Start with hot pepper-based paprika. That’s where Old Bay gets its spiciness. The other ingredients include cloves. allspice, ginger, mace, mustard, nutmeg, bay leaf, and cardamom. You may not have all of these around, but even a few of them mixed together can create a comparable taste. Be prepared to play with proportions to get the right taste for you. Again, it may not be perfect, but just a few of these spices together will work in a pinch as a substitute.
Remember, the key to being a successful Aldi shopper is flexibility and creativity. Don’t be afraid to experiment!
